Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls update – July 11

July 12, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

New MLB Owls

The 2023 MLB Draft was held this week with three current Rice baseball players selected, all pitchers. Just one year removed from his transition from catcher to pitcher, Justin Long was selected by the Braves in the seventh round, 219th overall.

The Diamondbacks picked the other two Owls drafted this year. Hayden Durke was selected in the 13th round, 385th overall. Matthew Linskey went a few rounds later in the 16th round, 475th overall.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers has been nothing short of phenomenal since getting his promotion to the big leagues in early July. Through six career games, he’s dazzled with his bat and some nifty base running, making five starts for the Marlins, all in center field. He’s recorded at least one RBI in five of his six appearances so far and is hitting a ridiculous .625 against left-handed pitching.

Through the All-Star Break, Myers is hitting .409 with two extra-base hits, no walks and six strikeouts. His OPS is 1.000 and he’s collected six RBI.

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois made two appearances in the week leading up to the All-Star Break, the first coming on July 5 when he worked through a turbulent fifth inning against the Cardinals, walking two, but recording a pair of strikeouts to prevent any runs from being charged to his ledger. His second outing was much smoother, escaping the seventh inning against the Phillies with an inning-ending double play on just his second pitch.

Through the All-Star Break, Chargois has a 3.27 ERA with a 1.136 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

Otto made his third appearance of this season, this week, all of which have come in relief. He worked the sixth and seventh innings against the Nationals on Friday, earning his first official hold of the year. He allowed one run via a solo home, but otherwise turned in a crisp six outs, four by way of the strikeout.

Through the All-Star Break, Otto has a 7.11 ERA with a 1.105 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Redone left a game last week with a bruised shin after fouling a ball off his leg but wasn’t placed on the injured list. There’s some optimism he returns to the lineup shortly after the conclusion of the All-Star Break.

Through the All-Star Break, Rendon is hitting .236 with eight extra-base hits, 25 walks and 27 strikeouts. His OPS is .678 and he’s collected 22 RBI.

Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls update – July 4

July 5, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers was promoted from AAA on July 3 and made his professional debut with the Marlins on July 4, entering the game in the fifth inning. After failing to reach base on his first at bat, Myers delivered with an RBI single in the seventh inning, coming around to score later in the frame.

Thanks to Rice broadcaster JP Heath for this nugget: Myers is the 25th Rice alum to collect a hit in the major leagues and the 31st player to reach the majors that played under former head coach Wayne Graham.

Through July 4, Myers is hitting .667 with no extra-base hits, no walks and one strikeout. His OPS is 1.333 and he’s collected one RBI.

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois made two appearances for the Marlins this week, dropping his season ERA by almost half a point with a pair of shutout innings. He worked a scoreless eighth against the Braves on Friday and a scoreless sixth on Sunday, also against the Braves.

Through July 4, Chargois has a 3.54 ERA with a 1.131 WHIP. He’s averaging 6.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Redone returned from the injured list on Friday, playing in a string of five consecutive games before a disastrous day for the Angels organization on Tuesday. Shortly after placing Mike Trout on the injured list, Rendon was removed from the game with a bruised shin after fouling a ball off his leg. Then Shohei Ohtani left the game early with a finger issue.

Rendon voiced some frustrations after the game: “It’s almost comical. It’s just frustrating. I don’t know what to do. I’m lost,”

Through July 4, Rendon is hitting .236 with eight extra-base hits, 25 walks and 27 strikeouts. His OPS is .678 and he’s collected 22 RBI.

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

Otto got back on the bump for the first time this season on Friday, tossing one scoreless inning against the Astros, retiring all three batters he faced in order. He returned to the mound for an extended relief appearance on Monday, working through 3.1 innings with more trouble. He surrendered a home run, one of four hits he allowed, and was charged with four runs.

Through July 4, Otto has an 8.31 ERA with a 1.154 WHIP. He’s averaging 4.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls update – June 28

June 28, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois only made one appearance this week, but he made it count. He worked 1.1 scoreless innings on Saturday against the Pirates, allowing just one hit and no runs. He was rewarded with this third hold of the season as a result. He’s now gone three consecutive outings without allowing a run.

Through June 28, Chargois has a 3.53 ERA with a 1.200 WHIP. He’s averaging 6.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

No official timetable has been announced, but Rendon appears to be on track for a return from the injured list in the semi-near future. Placed on the IL with a left wrist contusion retroactive to June 16, Rendon was taking batting practice on the field on Tuesday. That would seem to suggest he’s not too far away from making his return to the lineup.

Through June 28, Rendon is hitting .248 with seven extra-base hits, 21 walks and 22 strikeouts. His OPS is .682 and he’s collected 21 RBI.

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

Otto made his third rehab appearance this week, throwing four scoreless innings, his longest outing to date. He gave up three hits and one run while striking out seven. He now has 14 punchouts across 10 innings pitched during this rehab stint with a 2.70 ERA as he works toward a return to the major league rotation.

Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls update – June 21

June 22, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois made two appearances this week, working a combined 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out one. Posting back-to-back scoreless outings was huge for Chargois after a pair of rocky appearances the week prior.

Through June 21, Chargois has a 4.24 ERA with a 1.235 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon received some bad news this week, landing back on the injured list after being hit by a pitch in the Angels’ Thursday win over the Rangers. Officially on the 10-day injured list, Rendon is eligible to return to play as soon as June 26.

Through June 21, Rendon is hitting .248 with seven extra-base hits, 21 walks and 22 strikeouts. His OPS is .682 and he’s collected 21 RBI.

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

Otto worked three scoreless innings, striking out a trio of batters in his second rehab stint with the Rangers’ AAA club on Sunday. He hasn’t shown any obvious signs of rust in the early goings despite having been shut down for the last several weeks since the middle of spring training. For the time being he’s on track to make a couple more rehab starts before a decision has to be made on his immediate future, whether with the Rangers or in AAA.

Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls update – June 14

June 14, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon had a relatively quiet week at the plate, scoring twice and delivering a key double in a Friday win over the Mariners. After being removed in the later innings last week, Rendon has started and finished in every game he’s played since June 9, including a 10-inning extra-inning win over the Rangers on Monday.

Through June 14, Rendon is hitting .256 with six extra-base hits, 21 walks and 18 strikeouts. His OPS is .694 and he’s collected 20 RBI.

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois made three appearances this week, sullied a bit by a tough outing against the White Sox. Called upon in the sixth inning, he was tagged with three earned runs on three hits in 0.2 innings and charged with his first blown save of the season. Chargois allowed two hits and one run across two innings in his other two appearances this week, combined.

Through June 14, Chargois has a 4.91 ERA with a 1.295 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

Injured List

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

After an extended hiatus, Otto returned to the mound this week, beginning a rehab assignment with AAA Round Rock on Tuesday, his first time pitching in a live game setting this season. Otto through 36 pitches (26 strikes). With the recent news that Jacob deGrom is slated for Tommy John surgery, Otto could be back in the Rangers’ rotation for some time as soon as he’s cleared to return to the big leagues.
