Rice Baseball 2024: MLB Owls Update – May 2

May 3, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2024 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Tyler Duffey – Kansas City Royals

Duffey saw action in his second game since being called up this week, working 1.2 innings against the Blue Jays on Monday. He allowed two hits and one run while striking out two of the eight batters he faced.

Through May 2, Duffey has a 2.45 ERA with a 1.091 WHIP. He’s averaging 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers was called up at the end of April and wasted no time making his mark on the Marlins roster. He tripled in his first game and then hit a walk-off winner two days later. His family was in the stands for the big moment.

Through May 2, Myers is hitting .455 with one extra-base hit, three walks and two strikeouts. His OPS is 1.136 and he’s collected five RBI.

Injured List

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois reportedly suffered a setback in his rehab from neck spasms this week. No timetable has been provided for his potential return to the roster.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon is expected to miss a lengthy amount of time after suffering a partial tear in his left hamstring in late April. There is no timetable for his return as of yet, a frustrating development after a red-hot end of the month prior to suffering the injury.

Through May 2, Rendon is hitting .267 with three extra-base hits, six walks and 15 strikeouts. His OPS is .632 and he’s collected three RBI.

Glenn Otto – San Diego Padres

Prior to the beginning of the season, Otto was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on March 19 with a right teres major strain.

Rice Baseball 2024: MLB Owls Update – Apr 24

April 24, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2024 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Tyler Duffey – Kansas City Royals

Duffey was called up to the big leagues for the first time this season on Monday, April 22, appearing in a game that evening against the Toronto Blue Jays. The outing marked the third different major league team he’s pitched for in his 10-year career, spending nine years with the Twins before appearing in one game with the Cubs last season. On Monday, Duffey threw two scoreless innings, striking out three and walking two.

Duffey joined Bally Sports Kansas City after his 2024 debut for a brief interview:

Monty caught up with Tyler Duffey, who made his #Royals big league debut last night: "The young guys are here, the talent's ready … It's great to be here and now hopefully contribute to winning these games and continuing that process … See where we end up come October." pic.twitter.com/BfTVT8qPQf

— Bally Sports Kansas City (@BallySportsKC) April 23, 2024

Through April 24, Duffey has a 0.00 ERA with a 1.000 WHIP. He’s averaging 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Injured List

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Last week Chargois thew a one-inning, 20-pitch live batting practice session as part of his rehab. He has been out since March 25 with neck spasms.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon’s scorching red-hot stretch of the season came to an abrupt halt on Sunday when the Halos’ third baseman was put on the injured list with a left hamstring strain suffered on Saturday while running out an infield single. It was a frustrating development for Rendon to say the least.

Through April 24, Rendon is hitting .267 with three extra-base hits, six walks and 15 strikeouts. His OPS is .632 and he’s collected three RBI.

Glenn Otto – San Diego Padres

Prior to the beginning of the season, Otto was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on March 19 with a right teres major strain.

Rice Baseball 2024: MLB Owls Update – Apr 17

April 17, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2024 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

After a slow start to the season, Rendon has heated up significantly over the past two weeks. In fact, no player in baseball had a better week than he did last week. Rendon recorded multi-hit games five times in six tries including two three-hit games to bookend the week. That snapped a cold spell with an emphatic crack of the bat.

Since April 8th, Anthony Rendon (.480 AVG) leads the MLB in average of players who have 20+ PA's since 4/8/24

Rendon has a 4 game mutlihit streak & has recorded multihit games in 5 of his last 6

Through April 16, Rendon is hitting .242 with three extra-base hits, five walks and 12 strikeouts. His OPS is .595 and he’s collected one RBI.

Injured List

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

On Monday, Chargois thew a one-inning, 20-pitch live batting practice session. If all goes well he’ll throw a longer bullpen session on Friday. Chargois has been out since March 25 with neck spasms.

Prior to the beginning of the season, Otto was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on March 19 with a right teres major strain.

Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls End of Season Update

October 4, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 MLB season is done and Rice baseball played their parts across the league. Here’s how the season went for each of the MLB Owls.

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois was the only Rice baseball alum to make a postseason appearance this year. He pitched 0.2 innings in the Marlins’ second game of the Wild Card Round, allowing one hit and no runs. In the regular season, he notched a 3.61 ERA in 42.1 innings. His 0.6 home runs allowed per nine innings rate was his lowest mark in that metric since his debut season in 2016.

Tyler Duffey – Chicago Cubs

Duffey spent almost the entirety of the season with the Cubs’ AAA affiliate, making 36 minor league appearances with a 3.70 ERA before getting the call from the big league team on the final day of the 2023 season. In game 162, Duffey tossed two innings, allowing a solo home run, but otherwise fairing well. He struck out three batters.

Tristan Gray – Tampa Bay Rays

Gray wasn’t given a long time with the big league club, but he made every moment of his MLB debut count. Gray failed to reach base in his lone plate appearance in his debut game (Sep. 16 against the Orioles) but delivered a massive go-ahead home run the next day, his only career start thus far before being sent back down to AAA after the game.

You guys. I love baseball.

Tristan Gray.

Called up to make his Major League debut. Making his first major league start.

A postseason berth on the line.

He got his first hit early in game….THEN, in the 8th…Game is tied.

He hits a solo HR to give his team the lead.

Lucas Luetge – Atlanta Braves

Luetge signed with the Atlanta Braves this offseason after spending the last two years with the New York Giants. Although he started the year with the big league club, he would be optioned to AAA early in the summer, making a few spot appearances with the Braces in July and mid-September. On the whole, he totaled 12 big league outings this season with a 1-0 record and a 7.24 ERA.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers had a tremendous debut in the big leagues this season. On July 4, his first-ever MLB game, he went 2-for-3 with an RBI, the start of a terrific 10-game explosion. In his first 10 appearances, Myers slashed .444/.460/.583 with eight RBI and three extra-base hits. His offensive explosion would come down to earth later on, but he still finished the year with a potent .269 average through 22 games played.

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers / San Diego Padres

Otto spent the first few months of the regular season working to return from injury, finally making his 2023 debut on June 30 against the Astros, the first of three separate appearances against Houston in his six outings with Texas this season. Following a two-inning relief appearance on September 4, Otto was designated for assignment and claimed off waivers by the San Deigo Padres.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

On July 4, Rendon fouled a ball off his shin. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, that would end his season. Rendon’s unfortunate injury luck limited him to just 43 games this season. Rendon had some productive outings when healthy, but finished the season with a .236 average and 22 RBI, hindered by his limited playing time.
