Rice Baseball: 2021 MLB Owls update – June 12

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon drove in his 600th career RBI on Tuesday in the midst of a hot streak he’s been riding. Since June 1, Rendon is hitting .297 with 11 hits and 12 RBI in nine games. On Saturday he added his first home run since May 3, shown below.

Through June 12, Rendon is hitting .241 with 13 extra-base hits, 18 walks and 28 strikeouts. His OPS is .687 and he’s collected 30 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Brock Holt had a productive week, culminating in a walk-off hit to beat the Giants on Wednesday night. He also had a pair of multi-hit games.

Through June 12, Holt is hitting .242 with seven extra-base hits, 13 walks and 23 strikeouts. His OPS is .684 and he’s collected 11 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey had two outings this week, giving up an earned run in both appearances. That’s the first time he’s surrendered an earned run in consecutive appearances this season.

Through June 12, Duffey has a 4.50 ERA with a 1.375 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetege – New York Yankees

Luetege pitched parts of two innings in a single appearance this week. Of the five batters he faced, he allowed one hit with one strikeout and one hit batsman.

Through June 12, Luetege has a 2.97 ERA with a 0.956 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois appeared in two games this week, earning his fifth hold of the season on Sunday and his first win of the season on Wednesday. The win came in the 10th inning of a game with Detroit following a blown save by Chargois. He struck out two in the inning.

Through June 12, Chargois has a 1.80 ERA with a 0.667 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon finished his first week back from the injured list this week, returning to everyday action against the Red Sox and Indians. Although he did some good work with his bat, this play with his glove at the hot corner might have been the most impressive.

Through May 22, Rendon is hitting .239 with five extra-base hits, 11 walks and 21 strikeouts. His OPS is .683 and he’s collected 12 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt saw his first action since May 2 this week after spending almost three weeks on the injured list.

Through May 22, Holt is hitting .250 with three extra-base hits, nine walks and 12 strikeouts. His OPS is .733 and he’s collected six RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey saw action on a few occasions this week. He went two innings against the A’s, striking out three and allowing no runs. He also entered to face one batter against the White Sox, inducing a ground out from Yuan Moncada. He was later ejected from the game for throwing behind Yermin Mercedes which later earned him a three-game suspension.

Through May 22, Duffey has a 5.51 ERA with a 1.653 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetege – New York Yankees

Luetege had a workmanlike set of appearances this week. He pitched single innings in back-to-back games against the Orioles, facing three batters in each frame and retiring all three on each occasion.

Through May 22, Luetege has a 2.95 ERA with a 0.938 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois threw two innings against Detroit on Monday, his longest of his four outings to date this season. He allowed two hits, struck out a pair of batters and did not allow any runs. He followed that up with two additional scoreless outings later in the week, cutting his ERA in half.

Through May 22, Chargois has a 2.35 ERA with a 0.783 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon made his return from the injured list on Friday, going 1-for-4 against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. That was his first action since he was sidelined following the Halos’ May 3 game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Through May 15, Rendon is hitting .274 with five extra-base hits, seven walks and 13 strikeouts. His OPS is .794 and he’s collected 11 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt hasn’t seen the field since May 2, spending the last two weeks on the injured list. He’s expected to make his return to the lineup sometime this coming week.

Through May 15, Holt is hitting .250 with two extra-base hits, eight walks and 11 strikeouts. His OPS is .63 and he’s collected five RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey had one outing this week, allowing one hit and striking out one in .2 innings pitches in the Twins’ loss to the White Sox.

Through May 15, Duffey has a 5.35 ERA with a 1.750 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetege – New York Yankees

Luetege was active during the early portion of May but only saw one inning of work this week. He retired all three batters he faced.

Through May 15, Luetege has a 3.10 ERA with a 0.984 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois was released by the Dodgers following the 2019 season, opting to sign with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan last season. After one season abroad, Chargois signed a minor league contract with the Marines this spring. He was active to the major league roster on May 9.

So far, Chargois has appeared in three games, striking out four batters in 3.1 innings. He has allowed just three hits and two runs.

Through May 15, Chargois has a 5.40 ERA with a 0.900 WHIP. He’s averaging 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon was activated from the 10-day injured list on April 27 and quickly returned to form. He hit safely in three of his first four games back, including a Saturday explosion with four RBI and a couple of extra base hits. He absolutely crushed the long ball into the left field stands.

Through May 1, Rendon is hitting .269 with four extra-base hits, six walks and 10 strikeouts. His OPS is .762.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey was credited with his first blown save on the season this week, allowing a line drive solo home run to the Indians’ Jose Ramirez on Monday. The Twins would lose the game in extra innings. His second out of the week was much better, a scoreless three-up, three-down inning with a strikeout against the Royals.

Through May 1, Duffey has a 3.38 ERA with a 1.500 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt has a quiet week at the plate before his former team came to town. Holt went 2-for-3 on Friday against the Red Sox, including this RBI single off former teammate Nathan Eovaldi.

Through May 1, Holt has 10 hits in 40 at bats, a .250 average. He’s walked eight times, struck out 11 times and collected four RBI.

Lucas Luetege – New York Yankees

Luetge participated in a bit of history in the Bronx this week, striking out all three batters he faced to help the Yankees tie a franchise record with 18 strikeouts in a single game. He appears to be settling in quite well in his return to the major leagues, tossing some unhittable pitches and making batters look silly.

Through May 1, Luetge has a 4.02 ERA with a 1.085 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon has been out since April 10 with a strained groin. Reports indicate he could be back in the lineup at some point early next week, but no date has been set in stone just yet.

Through April 24, Rendon is hitting .290 with one extra-base hit, five walks and seven strikeouts. His OPS is .765.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey’s saw a bit of extra rest after a tough outing last week, but came back strong. He threw two innings this week, striking out two, walking two and allowing no runs. He picked up his second hold of the season in the process.

Through April 24, Duffey has a 3.00 ERA with a 1.833 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt strung together a couple of sturdy games in his first week back from the injured list. He’s upped his average by more than 50 points while holding down the third base spot as well as one pinch-hit appearance, his first of the season.

Through April 24, Holt has seven hits in 26 at bats, a .269 average. He’s walked seven times, struck out six times and collected three RBI.

Lucas Luetege – New York Yankees

It was a big week for Luetege, who picked up his first major league win since Sep. 4, 2013, when he was with the Seattle Marines. This time around Luetege was called upon against the Indians, striking out one and walking one in 1.1 innings.

Along the way, Luetege has limited hard contact. Following his Friday win, Luetege led all of baseball in the lowest average exit velocity against.

Through April 24, Luetge has a 4.97 ERA with a 1.263 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
