Rice Baseball: 2021 MLB Owls End of July update

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon’s continued absence from the Angels’ lineup continued on this week with no clear end in sight. LA Daily News reports he has yet to resume baseball activity during his rehab. He hasn’t appeared in a game since July 4.

Through July 31, Rendon is hitting .240 with 19 extra-base hits, 29 walks and 41 strikeouts. His OPS is .712 and he’s collected 34 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt played sparingly this week, completing two games over the span of the past seven days, appearing in four, often being limited in games against left-handed starters.

Through July 31, Holt is hitting .200 with 12 extra-base hits, 19 walks and 34 strikeouts. His OPS is .569 and he’s collected 15 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey made three appearances in the span of five days this week picking up a pair of holds in consecutive games against the Tigers before running into trouble against St. Louis on Friday. He was saddle with the loss in that outing, allowing three hits and three earned runs, the most earned runs he’s allowed in a single game since May 20.

Through July 31, Duffey has a 3.79 ERA with a 1.388 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge has been rock solid in the Yankees’ pen this season. He pitched two innings in a pair of games this week, striking out four batters in both games and earning his fourth win of the season on Saturday.

Through July 31, Luetge has a 2.94 ERA with a 1.143 WHIP. He’s averaging 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Tampa Bay Rays

Chargois was sent across the country at the trade dealine, dealt from the Seattle Mariners to the Tampa Bay Rays. He made his first appearance for his new club on Friday, working a scoreless inning of relief with one strikeout and no hits allowed.

Through July 31, Chargois has a 2.90 ERA with a 0.935 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Rice Baseball: 2021 MLB Owls update – July 23

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendong traveled with the team to Minnesota this week, but remains on the injured list. He hasn’t appeared in a game for the Halos since July 4.

Through July 23, Rendon is hitting .240 with 19 extra-base hits, 29 walks and 41 strikeouts. His OPS is .712 and he’s collected 34 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt has gotten off to a slow start out of the All-Star break, much like the rest of the Rangers which has tallied just eight runs over its past five games. Holt has one hit over that period in 10 at bats, making three starts and entering twice in the late innings.

Through July 23, Holt is hitting .201 with 11 extra-base hits, 17 walks and 31 strikeouts. His OPS is .574 and he’s collected 15 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey has made two appearances since the All-Star break. In the first, he picked up his second win of the season, walking two in one inning pitched against the White Sox on Monday. Two days later he entered in the sixth inning against the Sox, surrendering four hits in 1.2 innings with no runs allowed. He’s quietly been one of the more productive relievers on the Twins this season.

Through July 23, Duffey has a 3.38 ERA with a 1.339 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge has appeared in three games for the Yankees since the All-Star Break with varied results, facing one batter on Sunday, earning a hold on Tuesday and being saddled with a blown save on Thursday.

Through July 23, Luetge has a 3.20 ERA with a 1.222 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois has also seen three games of work since the break. Across those outings, he’s worked 2.2 innings, allowing three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. He did not allow any runs.

Through the July 23, Chargois has a 2.25 ERA with a 0.893 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Rice Baseball: 2021 MLB Owls update – July 11

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon ended the first half of the season on the injured list, his third time receiving that designation this season, this time with a hamstring strain keeping him sidelined. He’s expected to be ready after the break

Through the All-Star Break, Rendon is hitting .240 with 19 extra-base hits, 29 walks and 41 strikeouts. His OPS is .712 and he’s collected 34 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt had a five-game hitting streak interrupted on Saturday. During that run he hit his second home run of the season and collected three RBI.

Through the All-Star Break, Holt is hitting .219 with 11 extra-base hits, 17 walks and 28 strikeouts. His OPS is .620 and he’s collected 15 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey was called upon three times this week, earning a pair of holds and striking out two in 2.1 innings pitched, including two score-less, hit-less outings against the Tigers over the weekend.

Through the All-Star Break, Duffey has a 3.85 ERA with a 1.277 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge only made one appearance since July 4, but it was a good one. He pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief against the Astros, striking out one while retiring all four batters he faced in the big road win. He earned the decision as well, giving him three wins on the year.

Through the All-Star Break, Luetge has a 3.24 ERA with a 1.116 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois toed the rubber twice this week, working a pair of scoreless frames with just one baserunner permitted via hit in the seven hitters he faced.

Through the All-Star Break, Chargois has a 2.59 ERA with a 0.863 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon has started to heat up over the last couple of weeks, including four hits (including the no-doubt home run below) across three games against the Orioles.

Rendon left Sunday’s game with hamstring tightness but is expected to avoid the injured list.

Through July 4, Rendon is hitting .240 with 19 extra-base hits, 29 walks and 41 strikeouts. His OPS is .712 and he’s collected 34 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt strung together a couple of good games in the Rangers’ holiday weekend series against the Mariners. He collected a two-RBI (below) on Friday and followed up with a 2-for-3 day on Sunday.

Through July 4, Holt is hitting .222 with 10 extra-base hits, 17 walks and 26 strikeouts. His OPS is .625 and he’s collected 14 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey worked a combined two scoreless innings this week, retiring six of the seven batters he faced with one strikeout, one walk and no hits allowed in the process.

Through July 4, Duffey has a 3.45 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge was thrown the wolves this week, inheriting six total runners in four relief appearances. Five of the six scored. Those outings ballooned Luetge’s ERA after a seven-game stint in which he did not allow an earned run.

Through July 4, Luetge has a 3.46 ERA with a 1.152 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois battled through 1.2 innings of relief work this week, allowing one run on two separate occasions, but doing enough to help the Mariners win both games.

Through July 4, Chargois has a 2.82 ERA with a 0.896 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Rice Baseball: 2021 MLB Owls update – June 26

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon had a few important moments at the plate this week after missing a few days the prior week. He riding a modest four-game hitting streak, with a couple of extra-base knocks in the Angels’ weekend series against the Rays. That includes this long ball off Andrew Kittredge.

Through June 26, Rendon is hitting .232 with 15 extra-base hits, 20 walks and 36 strikeouts. His OPS is .665 and he’s collected 33 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt played in a handful of games this week and was productive when given his opportunities, including the below bloop single which would become the game-winning run against the A’s on Wednesday. It was Holt’s first RBI since June 9.

Through June 26, Holt is hitting .231 with nine extra-base hits, 15 walks and 24 strikeouts. His OPS is .648 and he’s collected 12 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey made two appearances this week, working a 1.2 inning hold on Sunday against the Rangers, his longest out of the season since working two complete innings on May 16 against the A’s. He followed that up a shorter three-batter stint on Tuesday, being credited with 0.2 innings pitched, one strikeout, one hit and a walk.

Through June 26, Duffey has a 3.81 ERA with a 1.376 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge continues to be one of the more reliable assets in the Yankees’ pen, working a combined 4.0 innings this week over the course of three appearances, allowing just one hit to the 15 batters he faced and no runs.

Through June 26, Luetge has a 2.37 ERA with a 0.947 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois came in to face one batter on two separate occasions this week. He got outs in each instance, stranding a few inherited base runners along the way. He owns a 2.00 ERA in the month of June.
