Through September 4, Duffey has a 3.54 ERA with a 1.448 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Rice Baseball: 2021 MLB Owls update – Aug 28

August 29, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Glen Otto – Texas Rangers

Acquired by the Rangers from the Yankees at the trade deadline, Otto made his Major League debut on Friday night against the Astros. He was near perfect in his first outing, striking out seven batters in five scoreless innings.

Otto earned a handful of nifty historical accolades along the way.

Interesting note on Glen Otto’s first big league start (5ip, 7 strikeouts) by @daveraymond4, the only other pitcher in Rangers’ history to strike out at least seven and go five innings in their first MLB start: David Clyde (5ip, 8 strikeouts on June 27, 1973).

— Tyler Henderson (@PTylerHenderson) August 28, 2021

✔️ Most strikeouts by an Owl in his MLB debut.
✔️ First Owl to not allow a run in his MLB debut.

It was a very good night for Glenn Otto! @Rangers@BallySportsSW#GoOwls👐 x #RFND pic.twitter.com/Cg3f67HdNO

With one MLB outing under his belt through August 28, Otto has a 0.00 ERA with a 0.400 WHIP. He’s averaging 12.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

On August 23, Holt was placed on the COVID-19 related injury list. He had not appeared in a game for the Rangers since that point.

Through August 28, Holt is hitting .208 with 14 extra-base hits, 22 walks and 40 strikeouts. His OPS is .580 and he’s collected 19 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey was called to action in three games this week, working a scoreless seventh inning against the Red Sox on Tuesday before two one-out appearances later on in the week. He allowed three hits and one run on Wednesday (also against the Red Sox) before bouncing back on Friday to earn a hold, striking out the only batter he faced.

Through August 28, Duffey has a 3.61 ERA with a 1.479 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge was called upon twice this week, retiring all three batters he faced in consecutive games against the A’s. He struck out three of the six and allowed no base runners.

Another from Inside Edge: Left-handed batters vs. Lucas Luetge this season: 0 walks, 22 strikeouts, 82 at-bats. A .549 OPS.

— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) August 29, 2021

Through August 28, Luetge has a 3.03 ERA with a 1.163 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Tampa Bay Rays

Chargois picked up two wins this week, bringing his season total to four. He appeared in three games, striking out two while allowing no hits in 2.1 innings pitched.

Through August 28, Chargois has a 2.38 ERA with a 0.936 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

Rice Baseball: 2021 MLB Owls update – Aug 21

August 22, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt returned to Boston as a visitor this past week, collecting three hits and two RBI in 10 at bats against his former team. He also scored on Saturday, a 10-1 victory for the Rangers. After appearing in one game between August 9 and August 18, he’s made three consecutive starts, all at third base.

Red Sox just played a video tribute for Brock Holt, who’s making his first start as a visitor since his departure after 2019. Crowd gave him a standing ovation and he saluted them back. pic.twitter.com/wbKDAXWisJ

— Steve Hewitt (@steve_hewitt) August 20, 2021

Through August 21, Holt is hitting .208 with 14 extra-base hits, 22 walks and 40 strikeouts. His OPS is .580 and he’s collected 19 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey saw action in two games this week. He was credited with a blown save last Sunday against the Rays, allowing one run on one hit and two walks before the Twins rallied to win. He worked a scoreless 10th inning against the Indians on Wednesday, striking out one and walking one.

Through August 21, Duffey has a 3.55 ERA with a 1.445 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Exactly one week removed from his first start since 2011, Luetge surpassed another personal milestone on Wednesday. He closed out the ninth inning to secure a Yankees win over the Red Sox, earning his first save since 2012.

Rice Baseball: 2021 MLB Owls update – Aug 14

August 15, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt wowed with his Ephesus pitch last week, but it did not translate into more time on the field. He’s appeared in just one game since for the Rangers, going 1-for-3 against Oakland on Saturday.

Through August 14, Holt is hitting .202 with 14 extra-base hits, 21 walks and 37 strikeouts. His OPS is .578 and he’s collected 16 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey has seen action in two games this week, working two-thirds of an inning against Houston on August 8. He gave up one earned run, one walk and two hits in that outing. Duffey bounced back two days later, throwing a scoreless eighth inning against the White Sox for his 15th hold of the season.

Through August 14, Duffey has a 3.68 ERA with a 1.409 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

I haven’t started a game since 2011. Never could of guessed that my next one would be 10 years later for the @Yankees Today’s one of those days I’ll always remember. #baseball #mlb #yankees #nevergiveup #backtothepen pic.twitter.com/JxflF5wHRp

— Lucas Luetge (@LucasLuetge) August 11, 2021

Luetge made some history of his own this week, starting his first game since 2011 on Aug 11 against the Royals. He went two innings, allowed one run and two hits. The Yankees would go on to win, but he was not credited with a decision. He allowed a hit and a walk in a second outing later in the week.

Through August 14, Luetge has a 2.80 ERA with a 1.189 WHIP. He’s averaging 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Tampa Bay Rays

Chargois earned his second win of the season this week and his first with the Rays after being traded at the deadline. He worked 1.1 scoreless innings against the Orioles, allowing two hits in the victory. He followed that up with a hold in his next outing, his 11th of the season.

Still thinking about this dominant sequence from JT Chargois last night. He threw 2 of his 3 fastest pitches of the season here. Has a chance to play a big role in the #Rays pen down the stretch. pic.twitter.com/MC1RTvFOEM

— Rays Metrics (@RaysMetrics) August 13, 2021

Through August 14, Chargois has a 3.30 ERA with a 0.962 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

Rice Baseball: 2021 MLB Owls update – Aug 7

August 8, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt has only registered seven official at bats this month with two hits, both doubles. It was his arm, however, that drew the biggest headlines. Holt came on to pitch in a blowout loss against the A’s and threw a 31.1 mile per hour Ephesus pitch, the slowest pitch to be called a strike in the modern pitch-tracking era (since 2008).

— Bally Sports Southwest (@BallySportsSW) August 7, 2021

Through August 7, Holt is hitting .203 with 14 extra-base hits, 20 walks and 36 strikeouts. His OPS is .582 and he’s collected 16 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey appeared in back-to-back games this week, both winning efforts against the Houston Astros. In each game he worked a scoreless seventh inning. He earned his 14th hold of the season in the first of the two outings.

Through August 7, Duffey has a 3.61 ERA with a 1.370 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge saw action in two games this week, extending his streak of appearances without allowing an earned run to eight games. He has 13 strikeouts and just one walk allowed over that period.

Through August 7, Luetge has a 2.81 ERA with a 1.130 WHIP. He’s averaging 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Tampa Bay Rays

Chargois earned his first official hold as a member of the Rays pitching staff this week, working a scoreless inning against the Seattle Mariners, his former club.

Through August 7, Chargois has a 2.73 ERA with a 0.939 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon’s 2021 season officially came to an end last week. The Angels’ third basemen reportedly needs hip surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.

He ends the year with a .240 average, 19 extra-base hits, 29 walks and 41 strikeouts. His OPS was .712 and he collected 34 RBI.
