Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls update – Apr 11

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon returned from his brief suspension and got his bat going in earnest. After going hitless in his first two games, Rendon has tallied three hits in his last three contests, scored twice and drive in four. His on-base percentage has risen to .381.

Through April 11, Rendon is hitting .214 with no extra-base hits, four walks and two strikeouts. His OPS is .595 and he’s collected five RBI.

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois has been dealing in the opening weeks of the season. He’s yet to allow a base runner via walk, hit or hit by pitch in 4.1 innings with four strikeouts. That strong start has been put on pause, though. Chargois was pulled from Sunday’s win over the Mets after three pitches and subsequently placed on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain. He’s expected to be sidelined for at least two and a half weeks.

Through April 11, Chargois has a 0.00 ERA with a 0.000 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – Atlanta Braves

Luetge was called upon three times this week by the Braves with varying results. He was charged with a blown save last Thursday, although the Braves still won the game. On Sunday he was hit around again, allowing three runs in 1.2 innings. He’s given up two home runs so far this season after surrendering four in all of last year.

Through April 11, Luetge has a 9.62 ERA with a 1.929 WHIP. He’s averaging 5.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

Otto did not appear on the Rangers Opening Day roster despite making 27 starts for the club last season. Instead, he began the year on the injured list, landing on the 60-day IL on March 30 with a right shoulder strain. He will be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Rice Baseball: 2023 MiLB Owls early season update

While several Rice Baseball alums are producing at the highest level, others are working their way up the ladder. Here’s the latest on the MiLB Owls.

Triple-A

Jon Duplantier (Phillies) spent the 2022 season in the Dodgers organization at the AAA level before electing free agency this winter. He signed a minor league deal with the Phillies in January and was a non-roster invite to big league spring training. He will open the season with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Tristan Gray (Rays) was a non-roster invite to Rays’ spring training. He will begin the season with the Durham Bulls.

Ford Proctor (Giants) was traded last season from the Rays to Giants, making his big league debut in September. He was a non-roster invite to Giants spring training before beginning the season with the Sacramento River Cats.

Dane Myers (Marlins) spent last season with the Erie Seawolves, the AA affiliate of the Detriot Tigers before being claimed off waivers this winter by the Marlins. He will begin the season with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Marlins’ AAA team.

Double-A

Matt Canterino (Twins) spent a large chunk of last season on the injured list. After completing a rehab assignment this summer with the FCL Twins, Canterino will return to the Wichita Wind Surge this spring.

Trei Cruz (Tigers) a third-round draft selection by the Tigers in 2020, Cruz will begin the 2023 season with the Erie SeaWolves, Detriot’s AA affiliate.

More on Rice Baseball: Latest from the MLB Owls

Evan Kravetz (Reds) most recently appeared in a World Baseball Classic game with team Israel this offseason. He’s now returned to minor league ball and will start the season with the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Reds’ AA affiliate.

Ricky Salinas (Reds) elected retirement this past offseason, concluding a five-year minor league career that began in rookie ball in 2018 before climbing to the AA level and remaining there in 2021 and 2022.

Single-A

Roel Garcia (Rays, High-A) was drafted by the Rays in the 14th Round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He made a brief stint in summer ball following his signing last year and will start the 2023 season with the Bowling Green Hot Rods, the Ray’s High-A affiliate.

Cooper Chandler (Orioles) signed with the Orioles as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 MLB Draft and appeared in a brief summer ball stint. He’ll start the 2023 season with the Delmarva Shorebirds, the single-A team of the Orioles.

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon will have to wait a bit longer to get into the groove of the 2023 season. The Angels’ infielder was suspended five games (later reduced to four games on appeal) and fined an undisclosed amount following an altercation with a fan on opening. He was hitless in his first two appearances.

Through April 4, Rendon is hitting .000 with no extra-base hits, one walk and two strikeouts. His OPS is .125 and he’s collected one RBI.

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois is three appearances into the 2023 season, his first with the Miami Marlins, and things couldn’t be going much better for the veteran reliever. He’s pitched a combined 3.0 innings with three strikeouts, no hits allowed and no runs, earning one hold in the process. He’s inherited four runners. None have scored.

Through April 4, Chargois has a 0.00 ERA with a 0.000 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – Atlanta Braves

Luetge made his debut with the Braves on Opening Day, his only appearance with the club to date, and was part of a 7-2 victory over the Washington Nationals. Luetge worked one inning, allowing two hits and one run, entering in the fourth inning before being lifted in the fifth.

Through April 4, Luetge has a 9.00 ERA with a 2.000 WHIP. He’s averaging 0.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

The 2022 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Ford Proctor – San Francisco Giants

Proctor made his MLB debut on September 24 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, picked up his first major league hit the following day and added his first major league RBI this week, as well.  He’s now appeared in four games. A third round pick of the Rays in 2018, Proctor made it to the Show after five minor league seasons, almost entirely with the Rays until he was traded at the deadline to the Giants this year.

That would have been enough for a debut week, but Proctor didn’t stop there. On Thursday he mashed a grand slam, his first career home run.

Through September 29, Proctor is hitting .200 with one extra-base hits, one walk and threestrikeouts. His OPS is .750 and he’s collected five RBI.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

On Wednesday Rendon was activated from the Injured List and began officially serving his five game suspension. He’s expected to be available for the team’s final three game series in Oakland.

Rendon left off his season hitting .228 with 15 extra-base hits, 23 walks and 32 strikeouts. His OPS is .707 and he’s collected 24 RBI.

J.T. Chargois – Tampa Bay Rays

Chargois saw action in two games this week, earning his third hold of the season along the way. On Sunday he worked a scoreless inning against the Blue Jays, following it up with a scoreless inning on Tuesday against the Indians.

Through September 29, Chargois has a 2.79 ERA with a 1.034 WHIP. He’s averaging 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge posted an interesting box score in his lone outing this week. He closed out the seventh inning and opened the eighth for the Yankees against the Red Sox and was credited with both a blown save and a win, his fourth of the season. He allowed one inherited runner to score, but was not charged with any runs on his ledger.

Through September 29, Luetge has a 2.78 ERA with a 1.364 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

Otto worked 5.2 innings against the Guardians this week, allowing one earned run before being lifted in the fifth inning. He was one out away from recording another quality start.

Through September 29, Otto has a 4.73 ERA with a 1.342 WHIP. He’s averaging 6.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

The 2022 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

J.T. Chargois – Tampa Bay Rays

Chargois was busy this week, hurling three scoreless innings against a pair of Lone Star teams. Last Friday, he struck out two in a one-inning outing against the Rangers. He then struck out on batter apiece in one-inning appearances against the Astros on Monday and Tuesday.

Through September 22, Chargois has a 2.76 ERA with a .980 WHIP. He’s averaging 6.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge appeared in two games this week, hurling a combined 2.1 innings. He allowed one earned run to the Brewers last Friday and one earned run to the Pirates on Wednesday, his longer appearance (two innings) in which he also tallied three strikeouts.

Through September 22, Luetge has a 2.82 ERA with a 1.307 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

Otto was saddled with a loss this week, his first since August 5. He’d won his previous two decisions. This time around, Otto allowed four runs (thanks to two home runs) in a 5-3 loss to the Rays.

Through September 22, Otto has a 4.88 ERA with a 1.373 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

The Angels announced on June 17  that Rendon would undergo surgery on his right wrist, originally expected to end his season. Recent reports indicate Rendon might be mulling a late-season return. Although things are far from certain, there’s a chance Rendon suits up for the Halos again this year. There have been no new updates on that front just yet.

Rendon left off his season hitting .228 with 15 extra-base hits, 23 walks and 32 strikeouts. His OPS is .707 and he’s collected 24 RBI.
