Rice Baseball: 2025 Summer Ball mid-June update

June 17, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice baseball players scattered across the country for Summer Ball leagues. Here’s how each has performed so far this offseason.

Pitchers

Three Rice baseball pitchers will be teammates this summer. Micah Davis, Nolan Roycraft and Caleb Williams are all playing for the Wilmington Sharks. None of the pitchers boast outstanding stat lines at the moment, but keep in mind the summer is the perfect laboratory to test out different approaches and pitches. A 0.00 ERA is nice, but not necessarily the ultimate goal for a successful summer.

Pitching Stats

Hitters

Robson is off to the hottest start of the Owls at the plate so far this summer, hitting .263 across 14 games with the Kelowna Falcons. Five walks along the way have his OPS up to .333, something worth monitoring for a player who eased up toward the leadoff position at the tail end of the Rice baseball regular season with his speed. Motley and Eldridge are each off to more modest starts, although Eldridge has showcased some power with four extra base hits in 11 games including two dingers.

Rice Baseball 2025: MLB Owls Update – Jun 11

June 11, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2025 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are making the most of their time in The Show. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers has become a fixture in the Miami lineup starting every game in June since his return from the injured list. He’s picked up a pair of doubles in that span with six hits and some impressive defense work as well. He’s been rewarded for his efforts by making the ballot for the All-Star Game following his tremendous start to the season. You can vote for him up to five times a day using this link.

MARLINS WIN!

— Marlins Radio Network (@MarlinsRadio) June 11, 2025

Through June 11, Myers is hitting .307 with nine extra-base hits, eight walks and 30 strikeouts. His OPS is .796 and he’s collected 15 RBI.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon is slated to miss a significant amount of time following him surgery this spring. The bad news is another bump in an injury-plagued stint with the Angels; Rendon missed a chunk of last season with an oblique strain.

Matt Canterino – Twins AAA

Canterino was thought to have a real chance to crack the big league roster at some point this season, converting himself to a reliver this offseason in hopes of limiting the stress on his arm and preserving his health. Unfortunately, he’s set to miss a third consecutive season, undergoing shoulder surgery in early March. The Twins since released him and signed him to a minor league contract while he rehabs.

Knocking on the Door

The following Owls began the season in AAA:

  • Tristan Gray – Charlotte Knights (White Sox)
  • Evan Kravetz – Louisville Bats (Reds)
  • Glenn Otto – Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Astros)

Report: Rice Baseball to hire two new assistants

June 8, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice baseball head coach David Pierce has started to assemble his coaching staff, including a former Rice assistant who is heading back to South Main.

First reported by Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball, the first additions to the Rice baseball coaching staff under David Pierce are taking shape. Rogers reports that Clay Van Hook, who spent the last two seasons across town as an assistant with Houston, will join the Owls’ staff. The report also says Pierce intends to hire J.J. Altobelli to his staff.

Van Hook served as an assistant at Rice under Wayne Graham from 2012-2017, arriving on South Main as Pierce was leaving following the 2011 season. While Van Hook was at Rice, the Owls had six consecutive postseason appearances and was part of the team that won the 2013 Oregon Regional.

More: Rice Baseball Season Review – Lineup

Altobelli is the son of legendary Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, who passed away in 2020 when the helicopter he was traveling on crashed in Calabasas, California. That was the same accident that led to the death of former NBA star Kobe Bryant.

After a playing career at Oregon, Altobelli joined the coaching ranks and is currently serving in the Boston Red Sox organization.

Rice Baseball 2025 Season Review: Lineup

June 7, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

The offense started slow but grew more consistent as the season progressed, helping Rice baseball stay competitive down the stretch.

It took the Rice baseball offense some time to get going, but by the time head coach David Pierce had taken over and solidified the lineup, the team began to hit its stride at the plate. A delicate mix of talented freshmen and the right veteran pieces made the Owl competitive hitters and provided support the pitching staff needed.

More: Rice Baseball embarks on crucial offseason

Compared to a season ago, this year’s squad had twice as many players hit .270 or better (six), a testament to a deeper lineup with a host of players capable of delivering clutch hits rather than putting all the pressure on any one individual.
