Rice Football 2026 Spring Practice Notebook 2: Secondary Shines

The new-look secondary is already turning heads for Rice football. Here’s what’s stood out the most this spring from the Owls’ new wave of defensive backs.

Head coach Scott Abell knows there’s a long way to go, but he’s content to head into spring break with a strong body of work from his Rice football roster so far this spring.

“Physical. Demanding. High Energy,” Abell said of the words he’d used to describe spring to this point. “It has been everything that we want to be in the first five days. Now, execution is kind of all over the place with a lot of new faces, but the effort, the physicality is there in all phases. People are competing for jobs.”

The competition is fierce, and physicality and athleticism are parts of what have made those battles so intriguing.
