The 2025 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are making the most of their time in The Show. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.
Dane Myers – Miami Marlins
Myers name popped up here and there as a potential trade option for the selling Marlins, but he stays with Miami through the deadline, where he’ll look to build on a strong season. He’s been the team’s primary center fielder for some time and has started there in 10 of the team’s 12 games since the All-Star Break (entering the other two as a late-inning replacement). It’s easy to see why when he makes plays like this:
Through July 30, Myers is hitting .254 with 13 extra-base hits, 15 walks and 60 strikeouts. His OPS is .652 and he’s collected 25 RBI and stolen 16 bases.
Tristan Gray – Tampa Bay Rays
Gray continued his trek through major league organizations this past week when he was dealt from the White Sox to the Rays for cash considerations. Gray broke into the big leagues with the Rays in 2023 and has since spent time with the Athletics, Pirates and White Sox organizations. He appeared in six games for the Rays following the trade before being sent down to the club’s AAA affiliate on July 30.
Through July 30, Gray is hitting .167 with no walks and three strikeouts in just six plate appearances. He collected one RBI and one hit.
Injured List
Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels
Rendon has been out of the news since it was reported he would miss a significant amount of time following hip surgery this spring. There have been no updates from the Angels or his camp since then.
Matt Canterino – Twins AAA
Canterino underwent season-ending surgery this spring and was released by the Twins before subsequently signing back with the club on a minor league contract while he undergoes rehab.
Knocking on the Door
The following Owls began the season in AAA:
- Evan Kravetz – Louisville Bats (Reds)
- Glenn Otto – Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Astros)
