League Roundup
Spicy Rice
There was plenty of optimism that Rice baseball would experience a resurgent season under head coach David Pierce, but the Owls have done better than simply improve. They own the conference’s longest active winning streak (five games) and have had extended winning stretches previously, including six straight in late February through early March.

The pitching has been tremendous and the bats have done just enough to find ways to win. The Owls might not be the most complete team from top to bottom, but they’ve proven they can hang with anyone in this conference.
Anybody’s League for the Taking
UTSA was one of the few teams to cool down Rice, taking two of three from the Owls in Houston a few weeks ago. The Roadrunners have the best RPI in the conference (No. 32), but not much separates them from other conference contenders.
The gap from first place in the standings to seventh place is just two games, a margin than can be made up in a single fortunate weekend. ECU (RPI No. 39), UAB (RPI No. 46) and South Florida (RPI No. 50) aren’t too far behind. With five weekends left in league play, the conference feels as wide open as it’s been for some time.
Can Memphis escape the cellar?
An improved upper tier has made it tougher for those at the bottom of the standings to contend. Charlotte holds the low spot on the totem pole for now, losers of eight straight, unable to overcome poor pitching despite having one of the league’s more productive offenses. Florida Atlantic has swung it well too.
Memphis, on the other hand, could be in trouble. The Tigers are 11 games under .500 with series remaining against five of the top six in the standings, having already dropped a series to fourth-place Wichita State in late March. All but one team earns a spot at the conference tournament in Clearwater, FL. Right now, Memphis has the most work to do to make it to the Sunshine State and extend their season.
