Rice Football head coach Scott Abell has named Jacurri Brown the Owls’ starting quarterback, sources familiar with the situation confirm to The Roost.
Following a brief competition throughout spring practices, Jacurri Brown has been named the Rice football starting quarterback, sources confirmed to The Roost on Wednesday. A dynamic athlete with a powerful arm, Browns’ quick assimilation into the Owls’ gun-choice, spread-option scheme made it clear he’s the best man for the job.
Brown, who joined the Owls as a transfer from UCF this winter, was originally a four-star quarterback recruit who signed with Miami out of high school. He appeared in 10 games with the Hurricanes with three starts before transferring to UCF, where he played in 12 games across the past two seasons.
He brings four seasons of collegiate experience with him to South Main, including 906 passing yards, 821 rushing yards and 14 total touchdowns. His ability and explosiveness in the run game are expected to be significant multipliers to the Owls’ existing offense, which has had success with dual-threat quarterbacks like Brown in the past.
Although he’s new to the Owls’ specific scheme and verbiage, Brown ran the option in high school. He’ll look to combine his experience, athletic tools and leadership to take the Owls to the next level this spring.
“You can really do a lot of things with it,” Brown said, praising the scheme. “If everyone does their job, you can’t stop it.”
Rice Football opens it season at home against Houston Christian on September 5.
