The 2026 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are making the most of their time in The Show. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.
Dane Myers – Cincinnati Reds
Last appearing in a major league game on July 29, in which he suffered a left shoulder contusion during a collision with the wall, Myers began a rehab assignment on Monday with hopes of returning to the big league team following the conclusion of the All-Star Break, per MLB.com.
Through July 16, Myers is hitting .256 with nine extra-base hits, 17 walks and 35 strikeouts. His OPS is .742. He’s collected 14 RBI and stolen five bases.
Tristan Gray – Minnesota Twins
Gray is riding a three-game hitting streak heading into the All-Star Break, despite only receiving seven total plate appearances across those contests. Gray was lifted in the late innings in two of those games, but did his work early, collecting singles and an RBI in a productive week at the dish.
Through July 16, Gray is hitting .235 with nine extra-base hits, nine walks and 56 strikeouts. His OPS is .611. He’s collected 29 RBI.
Trei Cruz – Detroit Tigers
Cruz got the call in mid-June, making his big league debut with a two-game stint with the Tigers. He did not reach base in five plate appearances before being sent back to the AAA squad days later. Trei Cruz became the 44th Rice Baseball alum to appear in a major league game and the fifth third-generation player from the same family.
Injured List
Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels
Rendon began the 2026 season the the 60-day injured list, a procedural move following hip surgery that caused him to miss the 2025 season and will likely sideline him for most, if not all, of the 2026 season.
Knocking on the Door
The following Owls began the season in AAA:
- Hayden Durke – Reno Aces (Diamondbacks)
- Trei Cruz – Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers)
- Matt Canterino – St. Paul Saints (Twins)
