League Roundup
Three for One
Eight teams make the cut for Clearwater, leaving the bottom two in the league standings after the next two weekends the odd men out. And with two games separating the cellar dwellers from the rest of the league it’s going to take a tremendous finish for any of these squads to jump up to the middle of the pack.
The most direct path to avoid sitting at home lies in the hands of South Florida and Tulane, who face each other this coming weekend. If the winner of that series can steal a game or two the subsequent weekend, they’ll more than likely punch their ticket. Otherwise, things could get strange in a hurry. And it’s important to note that crop of 10-11 teams above them haven’t exactly blown the field away to this point.
Top Four Tussle
While some teams aren’t sweating their path to make the tournament, the modified tournament format makes the next two weekends more important than ever. UTSA has some breathing room atop the standings, but the second seed is very much still up for grabs with this coming weekend’s series between Rice and ECU looming large.

The first and second seed now get double byes into the round robin portion of the tournament. The third and fourth seed get a single bye and will have to win one game before getting to that stage. The bottom four seeds are thrown into single elimination and have to win two games to reach round robin play. There are massive ramifications in seed lines still up for grabs.
So, even though the distinction might not seem like much, Rice baseball put itself in an enviable position with its weekend sweep over UAB, lifting them to fourth place in the conference. Should they take care of business in a home series against last-place Tulane, the Owls have a decent chance to not only make the field, but secure a bye. That’s quite the climb from where they’ve been in recent past, making the field as the final seed in each of the last two seasons.
