Memphis Tumbles
Few teams in the American Conference will be more disappointed in their 2025 season than the Memphis Tigers. Big spenders on the NIL front and player investment, head coach Ryan Silverfield was armed with one of the more talented rosters in the conference and finished with four losses. The Tigers weren’t even close to making an appearance in the conference championship when they lost to Navy on Thanksgiving.
Optimistic Owls
Both Rice and Temple made coaching changes this offseason and were expected to take at least a season or two before as they built with their new leaders. Instead, both teams entered the final weekend of the regular season in contention for a bowl appearance. Both teams fell short, but there’s plenty of hope in Philadelphia and Houston this offseason after seeing what their programs achieved in year one.
Oh-For-Charlotte
The topside of the American was extremely contentious, but even the teams at the bottom of the standings had their moments in the sun — except for Charlotte. The 49ers underwhelmed on admittedly low preseason expectations, going winless in league play and posting their lone victory over FCS Monmouth by one score.
Looking ahead – Key storylines
Conference Championship Game Set
With both teams winning this weekend the conference championship game is set, Tulane will host North Texas in the American Conference Championship Game. Navy, which also finished 7-1 in league play, misses out on a title game appearance via tiebreaker.
CFB Playoff
It’s not a lock by any stretch, but the assumption for much of the season has been that the American Conference champion would represent the Group of 5 in the College Football Playoff. Tulane led the race last week and would presumably retain their spot should they beat North Texas. If not, a 12-1 North Texas team would still be the likely favorite to get the spot over potential Sun Belt Champion, James Madison.
Army, Navy and The American
There’s one more game beyond the conference championship which will feature a pair of American conference teams: Army vs. Navy, slated for its usual solo weekend two weeks from now. The college football classic doesn’t count in the conference standings and will be played at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Dec. 13 at 2:00 PM.
