Tulsa Does it Twice
Tulsa’s upset win over Oklahoma State in 2025 was so unbelievable at the time that it got Mike Gundy fired. A year removed with a rebuilt roster — composed of heavily of North Texas transplants — history repeated itself. A week into the season and Tulsa owns the lone power conference win among American conference teams, just like we all expected.
Tulane Steps Back
Tulane beat Duke a year ago, but Kadin Semonza was unable to replicate that magic that Jake Retzlaff produced in this offense, at least not yet. The Green Wave were held to an unimpressive 258 yards of total offense and never managed to give Duke a scare at any point in this contest. Losing to an ACC team isn’t embarrassing by any means, but we’re used to seeing better from Tulane in these kinds of games.
Charlotte is Down Bad
Charlotte is in a tough place. A year removed from beating FCS Monmouth by one score to secure their only win of the season, the 49ers have regressed, losing to FCS The Citadel in 3OT on Saturday. The schedule only gets tougher from here and it’s hard to hold out too much hope that the 49ers are going to be able to turn things around any time soon.
Looking ahead – Key storylines
Memphis Takes Center Stage
The Tigers kept things interesting in the early goings before pulling away from Arkansas State at home. The only 2-0 team in the standings, Memphis has a real chance to take a commanding lead in the G6 Playoff conversation should they take down a Boise State team that next week that gave Oregon all it could handle. Potential wins over UNLV and Boise would give Memphis the best resume among non-power conference teams heading into conference play.
Lone Star Showdon
UTSA and Texas State have played some wild games in recent years and next week’s matchup should feature plenty of offensive fireworks. With in-state rivalry games becoming more and more rare in today’s era of the sport, this is one worth tuning into.
Let the (American Conference) Games Begin
The first league games start next week with Army hosting South Florida and Navy traveling to Florida Atlantic. The Owls don’t necessarily have conference title aspirations, but each could go a long way towards setting themselves up for success with a 1-0 start in conference play.
