Football Media Day Notes and quotes
Head coach Mike Bloomgren
...On strength and conditioning coach Hans Straub
[Straub] had a great summer with these guys. He changed their bodies and really kept advancing our mission, getting our culture instilled and making sure nobody deviates from out standard.
...On the culture of the team
Our culture is very simple. It promotes competition. It's the pursuit of excellence on and off the field. And it's the love of our great game and their teammates. That's what we're striving to get them to understand, that everything I do is not about me, it's about the guy beside me.
...On the new graphics and signage in the Patterson Center
Those graphics allow us to tell our story of Rice football history and also show you where we want to go in the future. It's going to help us in recruiting... and it's huge for our current players. It shows them that we're committed to the process of building a premier Division 1 program.
Asst. head coach Pete Lembo
...On the importance of special teams
I think about [special teams] in terms of player development and program development. Our goal is to make each and every guy in the building better every day. What we do on special teams is no different than what they're doing as linebacker or a wide receiver... or any other position, often it's just with more time and space.
Offensive coordinator Jerry Mack
...On what the offense will look like
Physicality wins football games. Controlling the clock wins football games and running the football wins football games. That's what we're going to try and do a great job of.
Defensive coordinator Brian Smith
...On what the defense will look like
The biggest question I probably get is what are we going to be? 3-4, 4-3, 4-2-5? One thing I can tell you is we're going to be aggressive. We're going to be attacking. We're going to stop the run on first and second down and get after the quarterback on third down. More importantly than scheme, we're going to play very fundamentally sound football.
